SF Condo Tile Bath Surround And Floor, May, 2023

This was a straightforward job. Until I realized I had not checked the slope or fit of the tub.

The tub was about 1″ too small for the footprint. After backer board is installed, the lip of the tub should abut the walls, and after a bed of mortar is put in (everywhere but that lip), the tile should neatly sit inside the tub lip.

In this case, that did not happen. I had to bed-out the tile as much as 1″ on the non-showerhead side. This meant a lot of mortar. This meant each tile had to be positioned in the right plane (leveled). This meant that I could not do too much work in one day, or the tiles – in a thick bed of mortar – would shift.

So, what was to be a 1.5 day job ended up being 4.
