The remodel landscape has changed. Budget-minded home owners don’t hire designers; they watch remodel shows, scour the Internet, and find deals on materials they select. What they often can’t do is install it.
OPTION 1: DO IT YOURSELF (DIY) INSTALLATION

Cost: Low
Wait: Short
Continuity: Variable
Quality: Low (some exceptions)
Trust: High (it’s YOU)
Counter tops and cabinets are not something that inexperienced carpenters or installers should ever try. That said, many crafty people have been able to install engineered or vinyl flooring, or outside pavers. Tile flooring is hit or miss, but requires costly tools to be done right. It’s a heavy and dirty job, when considering a big area.
OPTION 2: HIRE A GENERAL CONTRACTOR
![](http://remodelcarpenters.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/AdobeStock_261811461-1-1024x702.jpeg)
Cost: High
Wait: Long
Continuity: Variable
Quality: High
Trust: High
A general contractor isn’t typically necessary for a non-structural or cosmetic remodel. Horror stories of General Contractors taking deposits and skipping town aside, they are expensive and – in many regions – simply hard to find. Even if you find a good one, because of the demand, you’ll end up spending a small fortune, excessive wait times, and be subject to their whims.
OPTION 3: HIRE A HANDYMAN

Cost: Low
Wait: Variable
Continuity: Variable
Quality: Variable
Trust: Variable
The Handyman is a lot of bang for the buck. These folks are often capable of fixing functioning systems, and are mechanically-minded, so installing isn’t a lot of lifting. The catch is how much their skill level, and tool kit, varies. This really depends on who you’re able to get.
OPTION 4: YOU DO THE DESIGN, PURCHASE THE MATERIALS, ACT AS ‘GENERAL CONTRACTOR’ AND HIRE CROSS-FUNCTIONAL SUBS FOR THE INSTALL (RemodelInstallers.com or similar)

Cost: Low
Wait: Low
Continuity: High
Quality: High
Trust: High
