This is a good example of ‘better ingredients, better pizza’, as Papa John’s famously says. The client obtained about 70 square feet of 6″ x 12″ marble tile that was to be installed in a subway/brick pattern around the tub; there was also to be a mesh tile that would cover the entire bathroom, floor-to-ceiling.

This was apartment with good ‘bones’ on MacArthur Blvd. in Oakland, California. This was a ground-floor one-bedroom unit that had not been consistently occupied.
Anyone who ever tried to paint (any kind of paint) over urethane or varnish as a kid knows it doesn’t work. If you ever tried to paint wood without a hefty few layers of sandable primer, you have seen the same thing.
The existing backsplash was tile, which had to be demolished. You don’t need concrete backer unless the tile will be in an area that regularly gets wet (shower, bath, floors).
